Baxter State Park, home of hundreds of miles of Maine’s best trails, is only 2 miles from our Penobscot Outdoor Center. ,With trails for all ages - from easy to more strenuous. Bring your daypack, water bottle, some snacks, and get out and enjoy all that hiking in Maine has to offer! We offer guided hikes on request, and as part of our popular Family Adventure Getaways.
Moxie Falls Scenic Area
An easy 1/2 mile hiking trail will take you to the top of one of the highest waterfalls in New England. View 90 foot Moxie Falls from one of several boardwalks built atop the steep, wooded gorge. The stream has numerous swimming holes and is a popular spot on warm days. A great hike for young and old - bring your bathing suit!- Distance: Round trip distance is 1.0 miles
- Difficulty: Easy, great for all ages.
FAST: Forks Area Scenic Trail
Directly across the Forks Resort Center is the newly opened Forks Area Scenic Trail system. This 5-mile trail follows the Old Canada Road, with renovations made to this historic gravel path to create a wonderful multi-purpose trail. The trail travels north from Northern Outdoors to the town of The Forks. The Forks is nestled right at the confluence of the Kennebec and Dead River Valleys. Enjoy a casual stroll along the Kennebec River, or kick it up a notch and train for your next 10k by running all the way to The Forks and back. The hot tub and brewpub at The Forks Resort will be waiting for your return!

- Difficulty: Easy, great for all ages.
Pleasant Pond Mountain (2480 ft.)
This is an outstanding half-day hike along the Appalachian National Hiking Trail that takes you to an open summit atop Pleasant Pond Mountain with spectacular 360° views of seemingly boundless forests and lakes.- Distance: Round trip distance is 2.5 miles
- Difficulty: The hike is considered easy with a couple of short, steep pitches.
Moxie Bald Mountain (2630 ft.)
This mountain is a long ridge running north/south for about 4 miles. Although the summit is not very high, it has many features of above timberline summits because of its extended ledges and open crest.
- Distance: Round trip distance is about 10 miles.
- Difficulty: This is a moderately strenuous full day hike into the heart of the North Maine Woods.
Baxter State Park Region
If you're headed up rafting on the Penobscot River there are an infinite number of short to multi-day hikes in the area. Our Penobscot Outdoor Center is located just 2 miles from the south entrance to Baxter State Park. The 250,000 acre wilderness park is renowned for offering some of the finest hiking trails in eastern North America, with mile high Mt. Katahdin as its centerpiece. This is the end-point of the famous 2,000 mile scenic Appalachian Trail. The summit is a strenuous hike that can be accomplished in one day. It is truly one of the most spectacular hikes you can experience, and a worthwhile addition to your day of Penobscot River white water rafting.- Distance: Round trip distance is as much or little as you like with tons of trails to choose from!
- Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous, half to full day options.
