Enjoy Hut-to-Hut trips July through October: the best time for hiking in Maine
The vision for Maine Huts & Trails is to create a 180 mile non-motorized trail with up to 12 rustic yet very comfortable huts. We are very fortunate that the first two huts and over 25-miles of trails are located right in our back yard just across the Kennebec River.
Commencing July and running through the late summer and fall we are offering fully guided and self-guided trips that start and finish at our main lodge in The Forks. You don't need to lug a heavy pack with food and a tent to enjoy this trip. All you need is a light pack, your daily essentials and a sleeping bag, everything else will be waiting for you at the hut each night. So, come experience world class hiking and first-class amenities as you recharge on this new, exciting and healthy outdoor adventure.
The Huts: Poplar Stream Falls and Flagstaff, Comfortable and Inviting
The new Poplar Stream Falls Hut and the spectacular Flagstaff Hut are the first huts constructed in the Maine Huts & Trails System. A large dining area, comfortable bunkrooms, welcome amenities like hot showers, home-cooked meals, and friendly fellow travelers give Maine multi-day hiking trips a whole new meaning!
Your Hut-to-Hut Hiking Route: Three days and ~25 miles of Maine wilderness heaven

Start your guided adventure at Northern Outdoors Resort in The Forks. On day-one we will shuttle you approximately 90-minutes to the trailhead in the Carrabassett Valley. You will take a short three-mile route up to the Poplar Falls hut, where you can drop your gear and take a side trip to the falls. Then relax and have dinner at the hut.
- On day-two you will enjoy magnificent scenery as you huke from the Poplar Stream Falls hut to the Flagstaff Lake hut. Total distance about 11-miles.
- On your last day of hiking you will start off on the MH &T system at the Flagstaff Hut and intersect the Appalachian Trail which you will follow east for about 4-miles over Roundtop Mountain to West Carry Pond. You will hike past the three Carry Ponds to pick up the Arnold Expedition Historical Society trail down to Wyman Lake, where you will rendezvous with our canoe shuttle
across the lake and then take a short van ride back to Northern Outdoors, where you can relax at the main lodge or soak your trail weary legs in the giant hot tub. Total hiking distance about 12-miles. - Ask us about adding an exciting full day of rafting the next day on the Kennebec or Dead River to create your own ultimate river and trail Maine multi-sport getaway.
