What's the Difference Between the Upper and Lower Sections of the Penobscot River?

  • Upper Penobscot Gorge Section: ages 15 and up (2.5 miles)
  • Lower Penobscot Section: ages 12 and up (11.5 miles)
The Upper section of the Penobscot River is solid Class IV-V and kids must be 15 or older to do this section. Kids 12-14 can join the trip just after the 2 ½ miles of big Class IV-V rapids in renowned Ripogenous Gorge.  Northern Outdoors support staff will watch the kids for the approximately one hour after the others put-in at the top of the river. The kids re-join the group in time for lunch paddling the Class III-IV (and very exciting!) Lower Section of the Penobscot River.
