When does rafting season start in Maine?

Winter, snow, yeah yeah yeah…. bring it on. But really, when will we be hitting the rivers again?

When will whitewater rafting begin in Maine?

White water rafting in Maine at Northern Outdoors begins on May 4th, 2024 with the first of 8 releases on the Dead River, and with spring run off, this is sure to be a big water trip! Or, hit up the first Kennebec River trip of the year on Sunday the 5th! At 2pm on April 26th, we’ll be opening our doors at The Forks Adventure Resort and Kennebec River Pub & Brewery to rafters, hikers, boaters, road-trippers, vacationers…you get the point. We’ll be here!

Dead River rafting celebrate

After Saturday’s Dead River trip, we’re back to the Kennebec on Sunday the 5th. This is scheduled to be a regular 5,000 cfs release, but with all the spring runoff that’s usually happening at that time, you never know what you’re going to get. If you can’t make opening weekend, no worries. We are lucky enough to have the Kennebec River running all season long, with daily trips from May 8th through October 13th. Plus, seven more scheduled releases on the Dead River (including four more in spring) and trips on the Penobscot River Friday through Monday (starting May 25th)!

We’re loving our new base of operations for Penobscot River rafting at the Big Moose Inn – and we heard the same from all of you! With such an extensive selection of indoor accommodations to guests rafting with us, it’s a no-brainer! That means when you wake up in the morning and are ready to hit the river, you only have a quick walk over to our base to meet up with the Penobscot guide team and we’ll take it from there! If class V whitewater, a 12′ waterfall, and views of Maine’s highest peak sound good to you, check out more about our Katahdin Adventure Base Camp.

But it’s not all splashes and crashes of whitewater. Our local ATV club will post opening day dates for Forks area trails in the spring, depending on how wet of a spring it is. Don’t forget you can trailer up, or grab rentals from 201 Powersports available on site. Plus, our friends at Kennebec River Anglers are booking fishing trips NOW for those spring catches. Get in on the action and get ready to ring in Summer!

Whether you hike, bike, raft, fish, or just want to relax, our adventure resort in the Forks is where it’s at. Spend a romantic getaway in our cozy cabin for two, or bring your whole crew up to stay in one of our 4 bedroom cabins (sleeps 12). Pop your tent (or camper) along the river in our riverside campground, and build yourself a campfire. Wherever you decide to put your feet up at night, you’ll be sure to have earned it!
