Outdoor Experiential Education Delivers Lifetime Lessons to College and Continuing Education Students

Our custom college programs are one of the most rewarding services we get to offer to young adults at Northern Outdoors.  Students learn a wealth of skills and industry expert insights in outdoor recreation sports, recreation leadership, risk management, sustainable tourism, group dynamics, team-building, and much more.  We can create the ideal program to meet your group's needs, with flexible itineraries, diverse activities, and varied course durations. Programs can range from a one-day college sports team trip to more complex curriculum based programs. Both Keene State College and Johnson & Wales University offer Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Tourism courses at Northern Outdoors. 

Keene State College: Outdoor Recreation Leadership Course

Keene State College Leadership Program: Winter & Summer Courses
These hands-on seven day courses deliver 4 undergraduate credits as participants explore the trails and landscape of Western Maine. The course is available in the winter and summer. You will be staying in comfortable lodge accommodations every night in each course.

  • The winter course explores Team Building, Leadership Skills, Snowmobiling, Skiing, Map & Compass, Snowshoeing, and Snowboarding. 
  • The summer course features Team Building, Leadership Skills, Rafting, Climbing Hiking and other activities.
Led by long-time Northern Outdoors guide and experienced educator Sandra Howard, Ph. D., and Brent Arsenault, M.S. Education, these week long interdisciplinary courses are open to matriculated and non-matriculated continuing education students who wish to explore outdoor recreational leadership qualities, styles, and group dynamics from multiple perspectives (physical education/environmental science/sociology/communication).

Additional focus on experiential learning and examinations of selected program activities/guidelines; developing, leading, and evaluating activities based on varying participant requirements; you will additionally earn a Leave No Trace certification. Required texts and materials.

March 2013 Johnson & Wales University Winter Program Highlights

The Johnson & Wales students explored a variety of winter sports in their winter Hospitality Management Course at Northern Outdoors this March. Their activities included snowmobiling, cross-country skiing to Maine Huts & Trails, snowboarding at Sugarloaf, and in depth learning about hospitality management at winter resorts. Program Overview

Maine Rock Climbing College Programs - Northern OutdoorsAdventure Hospitality Experiential Education Program: 13.5 College Credits
28 Day Trips in Summer and Winter covering three educational areas:
  1. Adventure Sport and Nature-Based Tourism
  2. Eco-Tourism
  3. Leadership in the Recreational Setting
Tomorrow’s Hospitality Industry leaders are immersed in the outdoor adventure industry for 28 days on a fully accredited college course offered by Northern Outdoors and the Hospitality College of Johns and Wales University.

Daily activities integrate hard skills training (outdoor sports), soft skills (teambuilding, group dynamics), business theory and practice (risk management, eco-tourism principles), journaling, and guest lectures by industry professionals. This extended trip arms students with an in-depth understanding of the sensitivities of the outdoor adventure travel industry and eco-tourism principles, with the practical integration of business management techniques.

Maine Ropes CourseSummer Highlights

The summer trip includes Maine and Canada, and introduces students to the outdoor recreation activities of whitewater rafting, teambuilding, multi-day backpacking, camping, canoeing, seakayaking, mountain biking, and rockclimbing. Three distinct regions are visited, the North Woods of Maine at Northern Outdoor's Adventure Resort in The Forks, coastal Maine in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, and Montreal, Canada.

Maine Snowmobiling - Northern OutdoorsWinter Highlights

The winter trip includes alpine and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. A two day trip into the backcountry with a stay at the popular Maine Huts and Trails solar-powered cabin is a highlight for students.

Your Family Package was a great way to introduce our two suburban, TV loving children to the wonders of Maine. And, it didn't hurt that the whitewater rafting was more exciting than any theme park ride! Our family will definitely be back.
