Outdoor Experiential Education Delivers Lifetime Lessons to College and Continuing Education Students

Programs can range from a one-day college sports team trip to more complex curriculum based programs. Both Keene State College and Johnson & Wales University offer Outdoor Recreation and Adventure Tourism courses at Northern Outdoors.
Keene State College: Outdoor Recreation Leadership Course
This hands-on seven day course delivers 4 undergraduate credits as participants explore the trails and landscape of Western Maine. The course is available in the winter and summer. You will be staying in comfortable lodge accommodations every night in each course. The winter course explores Team Building, Leadership Skills, Snowmobiling, Skiing, Map & Compass, Snowshoeing, and Snowboarding. Led by long-time Northern Outdoors guide and experienced educator Sandra Howard, Ph. D., and Brent Arsenault, M.S. Education, these week long interdisciplinary courses are open to matriculated and non-matriculated continuing education students who wish to explore outdoor recreational leadership qualities, styles, and group dynamics from multiple perspectives (physical education/environmental science/sociology/communication).
Additional focus on experiential learning and examinations of selected program activities/guidelines; developing, leading, and evaluating activities based on varying participant requirements; you will additionally earn a Leave No Trace certification. Required texts and materials.

Course Fees: $979 per student

Course fee covers all meals, lodging, activities, equipment & certification costs, in addition to tuition. The course will start and finish in The Forks, Maine.

Maine and Canada Adventure Tourism Course
Program Overview
Adventure Hospitality Experiential Education Program: 13.5 College Credits 28 Day Trips in Summer and Winter covering three educational areas:
- Adventure Sport and Nature-Based Tourism
- Eco-Tourism
- Leadership in the Recreational Setting
Daily activities integrate hard skills training (outdoor sports), soft skills (teambuilding, group dynamics), business theory and practice (risk management, eco-tourism principles), journaling, and guest lectures by industry professionals. This extended trip arms students with an in-depth understanding of the sensitivities of the outdoor adventure travel industry and eco-tourism principles, with the practical integration of business management techniques.
