Take Exit 244 off I-95, signposted Medway Maine

Turn Left onto 157W, toward Millinocket

You will travel through East Millinocket. As you enter Millinocket you will pass a McDonalds, go straight through the light.

You will pass and Irving Gas Station on your right, down a hill to another light..

Go straight through this light.

Follow the signs towards Baxter State Park around a corner to the right and then a turn to the left.  You should pass the Katahdin General Store less than a mile after the left.

You will travel 14.6 miles from the Katahdin General store, past the Penobscot Outdoor Center. Immediately after the Penobscot Outdoor Center turnoff and just before “the painted rock” turn left onto a dirt road.

Parts of this road contain large bumps and holes.  Take your time and drive carefully. At the end of the dirt road, turn right onto the Golden Road.

The Golden Road is a privately owned logging road.  It is not well maintained and contains many potholes, bumps and washboards.  Take your time, will travel another six miles to Abol Bridge Campground

If you are checking to camp at Abol Bridge Campground:

Stop at Abol Store.  If the store is closed, you should find your late check-in information near the door to the store.

To enter the campground, press the button on the ORANGE post next to the gas pump to open the gate.

If you are checking in for rafting:

When the speed limit drops to 25 mph on The Golden Road, take a right onto a dirt road, just before Abol Store.

Once on this dirt road take the first left into a large sand pit and park along the right side.

Once you have parked follow the trail and signs from the right corner of the pit to the Northern Outdoors Pavilion.

To avoid running back to your car, bring everything you will need for your day of rafting.  You can bring your keys, wallet and valuables and store them at the Pavilion.  There are small lockers available at the pavilion.

(From Greenville)
Head up the east side of Moosehead Lake on the Lily Bay Road to Kokadjo. From Kokadjo (follow signs to Abol Bridge Campground) bear left onto the dirt road and head north to the Golden Road. At the Golden Road turn right (east) and continue to mile 19 towards Millinocket. Cross over Abol Bridge and Northern Outdoors is on your left.
