Outdoor Recreation Leadership Course

Dates: Sunday May 16th - Sunday May 23rd
Course fee $949 (covers all meals, lodging, activities, equipment certification costs) in addition to tuition. The course will start and finish in The Forks, Maine.

2. Earn "Leave No Trace Certification"

This hands-on seven day course delivers 4 undergraduate credits as participants explore the rivers, trails and landscape of Western Maine. You will be staying in comfortable lodge accommodations every night (except one night where you will be camping).

Led by long-time Northern Outdoors guide and experienced educator Sandra Howard, Ph. D. this week long interdisciplinary course is open to continuing education students who wish to explore outdoor recreational leadership qualities, styles, and group dynamics from multiple perspectives (physical education/environmental science/sociology/communication).

Additional focus on experiential learning and examinations of selected program activities/guidelines; developing, leading, and evaluating activities based on varying participant requirements; you will additionally earn a Leave No Trace certification. Required texts and materials.

Program Overview

Adventure Hospitality Experiential Education Program: 13.5 College Credits
28 Day Trips in Summer and Winter covering three educational areas:

1. Adventure Sport and Nature-Based Tourism
2. Eco-Tourism
3. Leadership in the Recreational Setting

Tomorrow’s Hospitality Industry leaders are immersed in the outdoor adventure industry for 28 days on a fully accredited college course offered by Northern Outdoors and the Hospitality College of Johns and Wales University.

Daily activities integrate hard skills training (outdoor sports), soft skills (teambuilding, group dynamics), business theory and practice (risk management, eco-tourism principles), journaling, and guest lectures by industry professionals. This extended trip arms students with an in-depth understanding of the sensitivities of the outdoor adventure travel industry and eco-tourism principles, with the practical integration of business management techniques.

Summer Highlights

The summer trip includes Maine and Canada, and introduces students to the outdoor recreation activities of whitewater rafting, teambuilding, multi-day backpacking, camping, canoeing, seakayaking, mountain biking, and rockclimbing. Three distinct regions are visited, the North Woods of Maine at Northern Outdoor's Adventure Resort in The Forks, coastal Maine in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, and Montreal, Canada.

Winter Highlights

The winter trip includes alpine and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing. A two day trip into the backcountry with a stay at the newly opened Maine Hut and Trail System cabin in March 2008 was a highlight for students.
