17 Jun 12 Not a Lazy River…
I'd been wanting to raft one of the northern New England rivers since I'd moved here – 33 years ago! Finally found a willing spirit/ companion who loves the forests and had never tried whitewater….We found ourselves in the great company of our guides (no doubt descendents of Robin Hood's "merry men"..and women) given their great humor and familiarity with the river and of course our fellow touring rafters… The Kennebec was running 6500 cfs rather than the usual 5000 cfs (see, I paid attention!) and that made the journey immediately ….wet since we sat in the front of the raft.
Time has a way of passing quickly when you are totally focused on every minute doing things like trying to stay in the boat while paddling and following the guide's instructions – the breaks at the Falls, the swimming areas gave us all a chance to appreciate the beautiful countryside. Our group was able to observe a bald eagle high in the trees and Monarch butterflies everywhere. Lunch on the beach – amazing, our intrepid guides can COOK TOO!!! The kayak duckies gave those who wanted to try kayaking a great chance to do so as well. The photos & videos were fun to watch (I will be ordering…) after as was staying the extra night to enjoy the N.O. compound.
Would we recommend it? Oh yeah! Will we be back? Already working on a major family get-together for next June!
