Penobscot River White Water Rafting Maine

Fantastic Penobscot River Wilderness Rafting Near Mt. Katahdin, Maine

Experience the Best Penobscot River Rafting Trip Available in Maine

Looking for awesome whitewater action? The Penobscot River has it! This full day trip combines Class IV & V action in the granite-walled Ripogenus Gorge of the Upper Penobscot River with a series of steep drops followed by pools on the Lower Penobscot section.
  • Northern Outdoors runs a classic top-to-bottom river rafting trip, interrupted only by a welcome grilled riverside lunch between the upper and lower sections of the Penobscot River.
  • We recommend ages 15 and up for the upper section because it is Class V white water. The lower section of the river below The Cribworks is suitable for kids ages 12 -14.
The scenery doesn’t get any better as you float by the base of Mt. Katahdin, Maine's highest peak and the dominant centerpiece of Baxter State Park. It is also the northern terminus of the famous Appalachian Trail.

Why You’ll Love This River Trip

  • penobscot river rafting maineChallenging, technical rafting - similar to the famous Gauley River in West Virginia.

  • Big surfing fun at Amberjackmockamus

  • The next step up in rafting after the Kennebec. Must be age 15 and up to raft the entire Penobscot River.

  • Kids ages 12-14 join for the riverside lunch and rafting on the Lower Penobscot section, Class III-IV. (Choose the Kennebec River for kids 10-14 in order to raft the entire river.)
  • Spectacular wilderness scenery and wildlife viewing mecca.
  • Noontime grilled lunch cooked over hot coals.
  • Learn more about the Katahdin region, New England's Wilderness Paradise.
