Guided Fishing on the Penobscot
The West Branch of the Penobscot River is one of New England’s great fly fishing destinations — wild brook trout and landlocked salmon in cold, clear water, beneath the shadow of Katahdin. Join Horizon Line Adventures (and Northern Outdoors) guide Todd Mercer for a fully guided fishing experience based out of the Katahdin Adventure Base Camp in Millinocket.
Penobscot Region Fishing Trips
The West Branch runs cold and remote through Maine’s North Woods, offering some of the finest trout, salmon, and bass fishing in the state — and very few people know it the way Todd Mercer does. Whether you’re chasing landlocked salmon on a full day float, learning to cast a fly rod for the first time, or working Millinocket area streams for hard-fighting smallmouth bass, every trip is tailored to you. No experience necessary — Todd is as comfortable teaching a first-timer to mend a line as he is dialing in the right fly for a technical rise. Guided fly fishing and bass fishing trips available May through late September.
Your Day on the Water
Your morning starts with a pickup from the Big Moose Inn and a short ride to the put-in at Big Eddy on the West Branch. From there, you’ll spend the day drifting the river in a Pavati or Hyde drift boat — one of the best ways to cover water and reach the pools and runs where trout and salmon hold. The West Branch winds through a stretch of Maine that feels genuinely remote: dense spruce forest on both banks, eagles working the thermals overhead, and Katahdin rising above the treeline in the distance. On full day trips, lunch is grilled streamside — steak, salmon, or veggie kabobs — before the afternoon session. Evening trips offer something different: low light, rising fish, and the river mostly to yourselves.
