Why You Should Get on the Water This Summer
We humans feel better near water. Recent research in cognitive neuroscience proves it. Raft guides know it. Learn why river time is therapy…
There are two items that top any list of Maine’s most epic adventures: whitewater rafting the Penobscot River and climbing Mt Katahdin. You can do both the rafting and hiking from our Katahdin Adventure Base Camp steps from Baxter State Park on the Appalachian Trail. Read reviews of Penobscot rafting and Baxter State Park hiking below (with Mount Katahdin photo bombing ever present.) More info on Penobscot River Whitewater Rafting (and a must-see rafting video with drone footage of Maine’s wildest river.) Post your Penobscot River rafting photos on Instagram with #NorthernOutdoors to be featured in our taproom.

We had a great time rafting with Northern Outdoors however our trip didn’t go exactly as planned. This was our second time rafting and we had heard that the Penobscot was the best in New England, so when it came time to book the river selection seemed obvious!

We would all definitely recommend Northern Outdoors on the Penobscot River to anyone, and we plan on coming back next year!

Nick Menounos really captured the intensity and the beauty of the Penobscot River on his trip this past spring with Northern Outdoors. If you want to see what the river “feels” like from an “in-the-boat” perspective, through some of the biggest rapids and most dramatic scenery, watch this!

I want to take the time to thank Northern Outdoors and your staff. My family and I had a lot of fun and a great time. Your resort staff, guides, equipment, training, et. al., were just wonderful. My wife planned and scheduled the trip, and I reluctantly went along. But I can’t lie to you – your whitewater rafting excursion far exceeded all my expectations, and some.

The Penobscot River is a true class 4-5 Maine whitewater rafting gem, and Northern Outdoors is well known for running this river as a classic top-to-bottom river trip.

Nesowadnehhunk Falls on the Penobscot River is a rapid of pure heart-pumping enjoyment. As you round the corner, a natural ledge lies across the length of the river in between calm sections creating a fantastically fun 12-foot drop. Hold on!
